~Character history/Intro story~
How did you wind up at the Academy?
Dea walked in front of her black horse with the white mane. They had been riding for four days from her Aunt Brigid's house in Corinth, and they were tired. Dea thought back on the events that had brought her to be walking down this road.
~~~~~FLASHBACK~~~~~
"You'll never be chieftess! You are weak and insolent!" Dea's father, the chief of their clan, yelled at his daughter, slapping her across her face. Dea had recently inadvertendly frozen the town well and crops for the winter. A boy in the village had made advances on her in pursuit of marriage and her powers had protected her, but they cost her something as well, her father's respect. Dea could feel the anger welling up inside of her. Before she knew what was happening, she was standing, watching his back retreating from her.
"Why can't you just accept me? What have I done wrong?" she asked him. She saw him stop, and he turned back to face her. His copper curls, so like her own, hung in his green eyes, which she also shared, only hers had purple flecks. He looked down at her, sadness written on his face.
"Your brother was supposed to be chief after me. He's gone, and I won't allow anyone to take his place!" Dea's father yelled at her, his face flushing.
"I miss Derek too! He was my brother, and your son, but I'm your daughter! You seem to have forgotten me! After Derek was killed, I was hoping you would finally accept me! But I guess you really don't care!" Dea yelled in return.
"I will never accept you! You are not my daughter, you are a halfling freak!" her father yelled at Dea as she turned her back on him.
She could feel coldness radiating from her, and she strode from the room, going to her own. Dea grabbed two bags and filled one with clothes, blankets and food, and the other with her scrolls. She went to the barn and saddled her mare, grabbing a water skin. She led her mare out of the barn, the other horses naying. She looked back at them for a moment, sad to be leaving them, then waved once, signaling goodbye. The horses hung their heads as Dea left. She swung into the saddle, looking back once at the stone structure that had been her home for the past sixteen years, then turned her horse down the North road and rode away.
Three days later, Dea found a ship that would take her horse and herself to Greece. After that, she rode to Corinth, staying with her Aunt Brigid for a few days, who informed her of a school that might be able to help her control her powers, the Academy.
~~~~~END FLASHBACK~~~~~
Dea touched her cheek, where she could still recall how it had stung when her father had slapped her. Her horse, Anam, nuzzled Dea's neck with her nose. Dea laughed, stroking Anam's nose.
"Well, Anam, I guess it's just you and me..." Dea said, putting all thoughts of the past month out of her mind, looking down on her new home and life at the Academy.
