~Character history/Intro story~
Tom was the son of Lycaon, the father of all werewolves, who was cursed by Zeus for sacrificing his son on Zeus’ alter. (Check out pantheon.org for details)
At some point, Lycaon, in an attempt to get revenge on Zeus, formed an alliance with a god who wanted Zeus dead; Tom does not know which god.
Lycaon and the unknown god thought that if a werewolf were given an infusion of hinds blood, that their wolf form would be able to kill a god, Lycaon, not wanting to risk his own life, offered his three-year-old son who had inherited his curse for the task, so the god took Tom.
The god then infused Tom with hinds blood. The god placed tom in a cage, and waited for the moon to rise to see what would happen. When Tom transformed, rather than being grey like his wolf form had been before, his fur was solid gold. Feeling this was a good sign, the god arranged for Tom to be raised by a hermit, who trained tom both to fight, and about the various gods. Tom knows enough to pass as a priest for any of the major gods, and several of the minor ones, he is well versed in all of their habits, strengths, and weaknesses.
After thirteen years of intensive training, Omar, the old hermit, had taught tom to fight viciously, He had also taught Tom to maintain control off his mind when he transformed into his wolf form, though at times it takes a massive act of will to do so.
On his sixteenth birthday, Omar tricked Tom into attacking strife, who was in the local village, playing his usual petty tricks.
Strife was in disguise, and Tom did not know he was a god. Tom attacked him, and severely mauled him, but the power of the hinds blood in his veins was not enough to kill strife, who escaped.
When Tom returned to Omar’s home, he found it burned, and Omar gone. Tom tracked the man into the woods, worried that he had been attacked. Omar, realizing he was trapped, made a deal with a gold miner to trap tom, and shave his fur during his monthly transformation.
Tom found himself imprisoned in a depleted mine, kept in a silver lined cage.
After another three years in prison, the mine shaft caved in.
Tom’s cage kept him from being crushed to death and the cave in bent the bars enough for him to be able to escape.
Tom was then able to dig his way to freedom in his wolf form.
After his escape he wandered the woods for a time, and eventually encountered one of the cadets on vacation from the academy, intrigued, tom went there, and was offered a place to stay.
